A New Frenchie in Black and Gold!

I came across this vintage Thomasville dresser and nightstand. Now, it wasnt horrible, just
a bit dated. Everyone always does white and gray or combos of said colors. I wanted to try
something different.
I went with black, a very soft, light gray and gold. Love it how it finished up!

The tops on these are that laminate type of paint. I really dont know what its called.
I wanted to see what the wood top was like, but wasnt one of those nice enough to refinish.

BTW, here is a pic of its partner night stand that I had done in my own "Elvis Presley" blue. I had seen one done very similar to this over at "Thee Velvet Glove". I loved how hers came out so I just had to try this color!
I made up my own chalk paints. Since its not like ASCP (no prepping needed) I did quite a bit
of sanding and priming, just to be on the safe side. In fact, that laminate white-yellow paint that
was on the drawers was a pain in the bum!  Places where I didnt sand it off well enough didnt provide the adhesion for the black paint.  Just when I thought I was done w/the drawers I had to sand off all of my freshly painted black and re-sand the original paint off completely. Then, prime and re-paint the black and wax it,,,,again! Nothing like duplication of work.  Really love it.  uh-huh.  This is where you ASCP people say "See? This is why you dont make your own." Well, yes and no. I admit, ASCP is so easy. However, she doesnt have a true black. Graphite is, well, graphite, not a deep, inky black.
So, a trade-off is sometimes necessary.
I used Martha Stewarts metallic gold paint. And a gold spray metallic on the handles.
This was by far the most time consuming paint job! Took me forever because of the
3 different colors. I had to keep doing touch-ups. All the gold edging on the drawer fronts were done by hand with a small brush. 2-3 coats. The gray took numerous coats too. Once I would sand, I saw bare spots and would do touch-ups. Ditto with the black paint! Oy. I thought I would never finish!
I think on a few of the drawers I taped and then sprayed the molding part with a gold spray paint.
I figured it would be easier to get a good base and then just do a touch up with a small brush
and the MS metallic paint. However, as you can see, the taping off part was not a fun party.
No-siree-Bob! Wayyyyy too much extra effort. It didnt matter what I did, it was going to be
time consuming. And it was.
Close-up of the detail work on the drawer front.

Putting a nice finish on black chalk paint can be tricky. Ive found that using a steel wool
to lightly smooth and sand is better than a harsher grit. And using the steel wool to buff the wax
off puts on a nice sheen.

In hindsight, I probably just should have gone with an enamel.
But I did want some light distressing. I used a wipe on urethane on top, sanded
with steel wool, and then used numerous coats of paste wax. The top is smooth as silk!

New WWMM video!

This weeks WWMM video has been posted and you can view it below.  As a woodworking project its a little meh. I think Steve is a great guy and I could never come up with an idea every week but this is something that I will never make out of wood. Now having said that, I have downloaded the templates and I am going to print them out on paper for my son to color and then glue to popsicle sticks

A New Clients Interesting Idea

Often my new designs are a result of interactions with thoughtful, know what we want, clients. I met some folks at the Woodstock Furniture Show. It was totally the last minute and, I mean, totally the last minute. Other furnituremakers were packing up their booths as we were talking ... Anyway, it turns out they had purchased a house in Manchester ( ! ) where I had sometimes gone to parties in the early 70s ( ! ) when I was a bartender. They are remodeling it and when I went by to check it out, it brought back some interesting, hazy memories ... The origianl owners pool table was even still there ... I took the photo below throught the sliding glass door as there was no one there and roughly photoshopped in their idea for a mirror, a 4" wide frame covered in galvanized, hung on the stone ... I wasnt precisely sure how to go about it so we had the local metalshop bend up some test pieces, stuck them on the wood with 3M Spray 90 adhesive and cut them to length on the table saw with a thin carbide blade and face shield. So far, so good ... We need to discuss finish colors, if any, and get approval for the copper boat nails we placed in the edge of the mirror. Without the nails it is going to be hard to hold the outside metal edges tight to the wood with just the contact adhesive ... Great concept ! Click the photos to enlarge them ...

The fireplace

With the mirror photoshopped in ... Actually, in the picture, its too big. The stonework is 7 wide, which I didnt know when I did the picture .. I think 4 will be perfect ...

The cutoffs of the steel parts with the spray 90 on them. The folds on the outside edges wrap around where the mirror sits

We are using 1" plywood for the frame to eliminate complicatons from seasonal wood movement ..

With the copper boat nails on the edge ... I plan to try a little patina solution on the galvanized and the nails just to see what it does, after talking with the clients ....

New dado insert for my Skil 3410 table saw

I recently wrote an post on making a zero clearance insert plate for my table saw.  The main reason that I made that insert was because I could not find a dado insert made for my table saw.  I did some more searching and finally found one on eReplacementParts.com.  In the description it gave the model number for the part it was replacing.  I then took that model number and plugged it into the search on the Skil site and was able to find the OEM part!  It did not give a picture and only gave a description of "Dado Insert Kit for 3410 Table Saw".  The after market website had a small picture that showed a nut and washer so I was cautiously optimistic that this one would come with one too.  It turns out that it did come with a new washer/nut combo for the arbor that is slimmer and I can now install my full dado stack!

Heres the pic from the after market website.

I felt like a kid on Christmas when it finally got here.

That was a pretty big box just to ship this little one but it
got here safe!

 Out of the box.

No question about it, its made for my table saw!

Here it is with a nut/washer combo and another washer that replaces
the one on the other side of the blade.

Heres all my inserts.

This is the zero clearance insert that I made.

Here is the new one installed with a 1/2" dado stack.  There is plenty of room
to fit in the whole 13/16" stack!

Here is the old washer/nut combo next to the new one.
