Gifts for woodworkers
Affordable gifts for woodworkers that wont get returned!
This time of year, there are a lot of woodworking web sites and magazines featuring gift buying guides. What many of them overlook is that as woodworkers, we want to choose our own tools. While I would love to have a new table saw, Id prefer to research it myself and select the perfect one for me. I dont recommend buying tools as gifts.
It is with that in mind that I came up with my list of gifts I am certain any woodworker would love to receive and would actually use. So guys, feel free to casually leave this post open on your monitor for your wife to accidentally see while you are in another room.
1. Wood. You simply cant go wrong here. Head over to Woodcraft or another store that sells exotic or specialty lumber. Pick out an unusual board that youve never heard of and buy a short length. Your woodworker will find something cool to make with it: most likely something for you.
2. Saw Blades. We always need sharp new blades for our saws and, if your woodworking spouse is like me, he uses dull blades far longer than he should. If you are unsure what type of blade to get, just go out to the shop and measure the diameter of a table saw blade or a miter saw blade. Most likely, it will be 10" or 12" in diameter.
3. Clamps. Its an old saying that a woodworker can never have enough clamps, and it is true. Buy some clamps: any size or type. They are all useful.
4. Drill bits. We use drill bits all the time and they break and get dull. A few years ago my wife bought me a 114 piece drill and driver kit. I am still using it.
5. Forstner bits. These are large drill bits used for boring large, clean holes. I bought a set at Costco a while ago for about $50.
6. Router bits. Again, these get dull and we tend to keep using them longer than we should. You can buy individual ones, or various sized sets containing all sorts of profiles.
7. Yellow wood glue. Yep, we use it all the time and can always use more. You might also consider getting a couple of empty squeeze bottles for it.
8. Sandpaper. We spend most of our time sanding. An assorted package of sandpaper is always great to have handy. Better yet, buy some sandpaper for his random orbit or finishing sander.
And there you have it. I mean really, what could be more romantic than a four foot Brazilian Cherry board? And dont forget to visit the Mere Mortal gift shop, too!

For the last few years my family has gotten along just fine without cable television and 600 channels of nothing. We had a Wifi connection and all the internet TV we could watch, supplemented by an HD antenna for local channels. When we moved into our new house my wife convinced me we should give it another try. I suppose convinced is a strong word, but it didnt seem like something to squabble over.
The end result is when I sit down to catch my breath at the end of the day, I end up watching some shows I would have never searched out without a mindless stare and a remote control.
I am only human, and grabbing the attention of my demographic is a studied art form, Im bound to fall victim to a couple guilty pleasures it galls me to admit Ive watched. One of them has been "Ink Master." I dont have any tattoos myself, not because I have an aversion to them. More a lack of money and opportunity converging at the same time. The art styles interest me though and I like looking at the ink others have collected over their lives.
The shows format is simple and similar to other shows like "Top Chef" a group of hopefuls are gathered and put through a series of tests of their ability and time management skills and three to four experienced experts sit in judgement of their work.
Of course the producers make story lines out of the participants backgrounds and interactions with others and stereotypical roles are filled. Someones the villain, someones the drama queen, and someone is the cheater. But, whether its needed or not, the soap opera side of the deal is ubiquitous and expected.
Heres my argument:
I think theres room in the world for a woodworking competition reality show. I know several years ago there was a show of handyman variety, but my memory tells me it was centered around carpentry skills. I would like to see a group of a dozen woodworkers gathered together and put through a furniture building competition.
I understand the issue is the length of time some builds can be. Its pretty obvious a Philadelphia Highboy isnt going to be a basic challenge, but given open shop time, imagine what you could accomplish in three days of pure build time with a day of finishing time. Conceivably you could accomplish three projects in a two week period.
Exhausting, probably in fact most definitely, but the endurance is part of the challenge. And maybe in the end the Highboy can be part of the challenge. Say two weeks to build a Highboy for the final challenge.
The upside? Beyond providing me with some relatable television viewing opportunities.
1. Promotion of the craft to possible clients. If done correctly and done well (two lofty goals I know) the show can promote custom built furniture. It can show people all the things theyve been missing as they stroll through the aisles of Ikea and WalMart. It can promote the idea of having heirloom quality furniture, the kind that can be passed down for generations.
2. Promotion of the craft to possible participants. There was a time when manual skills was something taught to youth in school, and independence was cherished over consumerism. Both of these ideals can manifest with some time spent in the shop. Ive read peoples concerns about the craft. the lack of youth and the lack of diversity. This is one way to spread the word, to get new people excited about making shavings or sawdust, and introduce them to the vast diversity there is in making things from trees.
3. General education of the public. I have a difficult time explaining what I do in my spare time to people I work with. The worst question I try and answer is "Oh what kind of woodworking do you do?" like I could just answer "The purple kind" and theyd know what Im talking about. When they find out I work with mostly hand tools, I might as well try and explain how I just commuted in to work from Venus inside my own personal space bubble. A show like this could at least help spark some relatable conversation.
4. Promotion of the various companies and suppliers. If you look at it from a purely skeptical, capitalistic view point. Think of the dozens of sponsorships from woodworking product manufacturers that could be available for such a show. I had no idea what "Whole Foods" was until I watched "Top Chef" I wonder what Rockler or Woodcraft could do with the same exposure. And the shorter Flash Challenges that start the show are a great showcase for smaller boutique manufacturers like Bad Axe and Blue Spruce.
The downside might be in the drama department. I have trouble picturing a group of woodworkers being anything other than humble or supportive. Then I think about the short amount of time Ive spent around some of the online forums, and I think as a group we could probably hold our own in this department.
Who would you nominate for the three celebrity judges? Who would you like to see as guest judges? What project ideas would make good challenges? Youd want to focus on a different "genre" every week, (week three is Windsor week). At the least its a fun thing to ponder.
In the end, if the chance ever came up, Id be up to throw down against eleven other woodworkers. At the very least it would be the best of all learning opportunities. Who knows, I might even find that Im the shows "villain"

A gift for Star
I decided to make a small bench for my wife, Star, for Christmas. This is similar to the one my dad made, and Star wanted one for our entryway.
I bought a 11 piece of solid maple. It came with two straight edges. Therefore, I need to run this through a series of cuts to straighten it and get the usable material out of it. This is almost fresh off the tree!
I cut out what I needed, and didnt have much left. I am rounding off some of the corners, and sanding everything before assembly.

New dado insert for my Skil 3410 table saw
I recently wrote an post on making a zero clearance insert plate for my table saw. The main reason that I made that insert was because I could not find a dado insert made for my table saw. I did some more searching and finally found one on eReplacementParts.com. In the description it gave the model number for the part it was replacing. I then took that model number and plugged it into the search on the Skil site and was able to find the OEM part! It did not give a picture and only gave a description of "Dado Insert Kit for 3410 Table Saw". The after market website had a small picture that showed a nut and washer so I was cautiously optimistic that this one would come with one too. It turns out that it did come with a new washer/nut combo for the arbor that is slimmer and I can now install my full dado stack!

This is the zero clearance insert that I made.
Here is the new one installed with a 1/2" dado stack. There is plenty of room

I took some time on this day to put in the final wall next to the stairs, do some work on the underside of the stairway, do some much needed sanding, and to start on the top...
Here I am starting on the top. I am making it as one peice, then cutting it when I am ready, so that it will fold open to reveal the storage area. I am putting a 3/4" solid maple edge banding all the way around. Im fastening it with both glue and brads, because this will be a moving part and will be a point of alot of handling. Itll take at least a day to dry before I can work on it again...
